Aging of Schweizer's reagent

R. Domansk√Ĺ

Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava

Abstract: The changes during aging of Schweizer's reagent (I) decrease its ability to dissolve the cellulose. The sepn. of CuO is aided by increasing the temp. but it can be greatly suppressed by the addn. of stabilizer (sucrose, glucose). On prolonged aging the activity of I is very much decreased by the increasing concn. of (NH4)2CO3 (by absorption of CO2 from the air) and by oxidation of NH3 with atm. O. Even small amts. of alkali extd. from glass decrease the activity of I.
