Kinetics of condensation of pyrocatechol with formaldehyde in solution of sodium hydroxide

Abstract: At higher temps. (35°, 40°, 45°, and 50°), the condensation (I) of pyrocatechol with (CH2O)3 (mol. ratio 1:1) in NaOH is a 1st-order reaction. At lower temp. (30°), I is a 2nd-order reaction. The relation of reaction kinetics to temp. was compared with the Arrhenius equation and the value of activation energy of condensation calcd.: Ε = 19020 cal. There is a considerable dependence of the reaction rate constant on the concn. of NaOH.
