Abstract: A possible theoretical electrochem. reaction mechanism in the decompn. of Na amalgam in the presence of various cations in the electrolyte was discussed. The following order of effectiveness of individual metals on the decompn. of unpolarized Na amalgam was detd.: Mo, Cr, Co, Fe, Ni, Zn, Pb, Cd, and Bi. The order of effectiveness of some metals on the polarized Na amalgam during the electrolysis under the chosen conditions was detd.: Mo, Fe, Cr, Ni, and Co. The exptl. dependency of the compn. of stainless steel in NaCl soln. on the amt. of H (vol. percent) could be expressed: H % = 1.20 C1.09, where C = the compn. of the stainless steel. The total concn. of Mo, Cr, Fe, Co, and Ni, which was very effective in increasing the amt. of H in Cl2, was studied. A concn. as low as 0.0022 g./l. of all metals in neutral NaCl soln. increased the amt. of H up to 14.7%.
