The synthesis of pyrethrum's synergists with methylene-and ethylenedioxybenzene

Abstract: Seventeen derivs. of methylenedioxybenzene (I) with synergistic effect for pyrethrum were prepd. By chloromethylation of I and 1-propyl-3,4-methylenedioxybenzene (II) and by the condensation of chloromethylated products with alkoxyethanol, alkylthioethanol, N,N-diethylaminoethanol, octanol, and Na octyl mercaptan, compds. of high synergistic effect for pyrethrum were prepd. Twelve of them are described in the literature. Based on the insecticide tests some relation between the structure and the synergistic effect was derived. The prepn. α-[2-(butoxyethoxy)ethoxy]-3,4-ethylenedioxytoluene compared with its I analog was found to be synergistically inactive. By the chloromethylation of I at higher temp. unknown 1,2-bis(chloromethyl)-4,5methylenedioxybenzene was prepd.; b. 116-19°, m. 76° and for C9H8O2Cl2 found 32.34% Cl, calcd. 32.37%.
