Alkali sulfite lignin. II. The composition and the functional groups

Abstract: cf. C.A. 49, 7240g. Alkali sulfite lignin (I) obtained by heating sulfite liquor with NH₃ under pressure contains organically bound N and a decreased amt. of S. The N is bound either by addn. to the enol bond or by replacement of a sulfite group. The presence of keto-enol configuration can be proven by the pptn. of I with HI as a halogen deriv. of lignin. The amt. of MeO in I (1 in each C₉ building stone) remains about the same.
