Abstract: cf. CA 54, 18954e. The speeds of the decompn. of SO2 solns. with the addn. of glucose, HCO2H, furfural, S, and thiosulfates in buffered and unbuffered solns. at 110, 125, 140, and 150° for 2 hrs. in sealed tubes were studied. Glucose and furfural at 110 and 125° do not accelerate the decompn. appreciably and relatively little at higher temps. HCO2H and thiosulfates are strongly active even at the lowest temp., more in the buffered than in the unbuffered soln. S shows an activity similar to that of the thiosulfates (although weaker). Apparently a relatively smaller surface area is presented by S, which in the buffered solns. is converted slowly into sol. thiosulfates. In sulfite digestions HCO2H and thiosulfates are very detrimental because they accelerate the decompn. of SO2 even in the initial phase of cooking at low temp. Glucose is slightly and furfural the least harmful.
