The colorimetric determination of 1-chloro-2-propanol with ammonium ceric nitrate

Abstract: For a rapid detn. of 1-chloro-2-propanol (I) a modified colorimetric method (Reid and Truelove, CA 46, 7474d) with (NH4)2Ce(NO3)6 showing an error of 1.0% is described. From 2.0 to 4.0% I was most suitable for the detn. The complex is stable at 15-55°. The stability of the extinction is disturbed by 3.0% propylene oxide and by pH values >7.0. In the presence of Ca(OH)2, the pH is lowered to 2.0-4.0 by the addn. of HNO3. If the sample is of H2O insol., dioxane is used as a solvent. From the intensity of the color, the no. of C atoms can be detd. (Duke and Smith CA 34, 36208).
