Abstract: With the Oth-Tompa thermodynamic potential (CA 55, 6126d), general phase equations characterizing the thermal and chem. deformations of chem. fibers in equil. with the vapor or liquid phase of the swelling agent were described. The deformation of fibers in contact with the pure liquid swelling agent and with the soln. of polymer in the swelling agent was evaluated. The methods for the detn. of the enthalpic component FH = (∂H/∂L)T,P,nSA, of the entropic component Fs - T(∂S/∂L)T,P,nSA (where L is the length of the fiber, nSA is the no. of moles of the swelling agent, and F is the applied force) and of the Flory-Huggins interaction parameters were described. After detg. the dependence of the retractive force of the fiber on the temp., the absorption coeff. and Hermans' parameter (CA 57, 7452c), FH and FS, can be calcd. from the anal. data. The final retractive force is: F = FH + FS. From the deviation |F - (FH + FS)|, the validity of the Hermans model can be judged.
