The transformation of steroids with Ustilago violacea

Abstract: The ability of microorganisms to produce enzymes capable of changing the steroid mol. was studied. Some of these transformations are of practical value, because it is possible to replace some costly org. syntheses in the prepn. of steroids. These transformations were detd. by paper chromatography and by ultraviolet and infrared spectroscopy. By use of U. violacea, 4-androstene-3,17-dione was changed into testosterone by changing the keto group of C-17 into OH, 1,4-androstadiene-3,17-dione into 4-androstene-3,17-dione, by the satn. of the double bond between C.sbd.1 and C.sbd.2, and 11α-hydroxyprogesterone into progesterone by the cleavage of the OH group of C.sbd.11. The others tested were testosterone, cortisone, dehydroepiandrosterone, estradiol, adrenosterone, pregnane-3,11,20-trione, and pregnan-11α-ol-3,20-dione.
