Thermodynamics of the deformation of synthetic fibers. II. Application of the Oth-Tompa thermodynamic potential to a closed system

Abstract: cf. CA 61, 16223d. With the Oth-Tompa thermodynamic potential J (CA 55, 6126d), general equations describing the thermal deformation of synthetic fibers contg. a certain amt. of low-mol.-wt. polar compds. were derived. The equations of the macroscopic thermodynamics for the closed system (fiber + low-mol.-wt. compds.) are given with the assocn. of Hermans' (CA 57, 7452c) statistical model for swollen networks of chain polymers. Equations for the detn. of the enthalpic component FH and the entropic component FS, affecting the tensile strength of the fiber under various phys. conditions, are defined.
