Abstract: The qual. compns. of mixts. of polypropylene and polystyrene and of the grafted polypropylene were detd. from the products of thermal degradation. These were detd. by gas chromatography with an error of ± 5%. The optimum temp. for the pyrolysis was 550° on the basis of the yield of styrene and 600° on the basis of the yield of propylene. Because the calibration line of the mixt. of the polymers and of grafted polypropylene is the same, the compn. of the grafted polypropylene can be detd. from the calibration line of the mixt. The no. of points on the polypropylene chain where grafting occurred is so low that it has no appreciable effect on the amt. of styrene produced by the pyrolysis. The amts. of propylene and styrene formed are the same for mixts. of atactic polypropylene with styrene as for those of grafted isotactic polypropylene with styrene.
