Abstract: A new procedure for direct chlorination of cyclopentadiene with a mixt. of Cl and HCl, so that it was possible to control a strongly exothermic reaction, was described. The process was composed of 2 stages. In the 1st (liquid) stage, the addn. reactions of HCl and Cl with cyclopentadiene to trichloro- and tetrachlorocyclopentane were carried out in a cooled reactor. In the 2nd stage, the substitution reactions of tri- and tetrachlorocyclopentane to penta- and hexachlorocyclopentane were carried out in a heated reactor. This procedure was suitable for a com. continuous process and with a theoretical consumption of Cl it gave quant. yield. The final product had a sp. gr. of 1.50-1.70 with a min. content (2%) of undesirable polymers.
