Polarographic study of kinetics of reduction of bromates by thiocyanates

Abstract: Kinetics of the redn. of NaBrO3 with NaSCN in HCl by the recording of the polarog. wave of NaBrO3 in relation to time was studied. The measured rate const. of the redn. of NaBrO3 increases linearly with the increasing concn. of NaSCN in the range 10-3M to 4 × 10-2M, and with the increasing concn. of HCl, it increases linearly with the square of concn. of H+. From the relation of the temp. to the rate const. the activation energy ΔH = 11.4 kcal./mol and the activation entropy ΔS = 28.01 cal./g. mole was detd. The rate defining the degree of the reaction is the decompn. of the intermediate compd. BrO2.SCN.
