Abstract:  Sc2O3 (5.1 g.) was dissolved in a slight excess of 1:1 HCl, the soln. filtered, dild. with H2O to 250 ml. and 10.1 g. KH2PO4 (dild. to 250 ml. with H2O) added with stirring. The pH was adjusted to 4 with NaOAc soln. The white ppt. of ScPO4.xH2O (where x ∼3.2) was characterized using GTA, DTA, x-ray powder method, and infrared spectroscopy. Adsorbed H2O (not crystal lattice H2O) was evolved at 20-350° to give ScPO4. Heating at 800-30° causes formation of amorphous ScPO4.
