Copper(II) complexes with organic ligands. VI. Reactions of diaquobis(salicylato)copper(II) with o-phenylene-diamine

Abstract: The complex forming properties of o-phenylenediamine (I) with diaquobis(salicylato)copper(II) in EtOH solns. were studied. The compds. prepd. at room temp. (detd. by the x-ray powder diffraction) were: Cu(HOC6H4CO2)2L, Cu(HOC6H4CO2)L.H2O (II), α-CuL2(HOC6H4CO2)2, β-CuL2(HOC6H4CO2)2, and CuL4(HOC6H4CO2)2 (III), where L = I. II can be dehydrated to the anhyd. form, and it reverts to the original monohydrate form in humid air. The β-form can be prepd. by the decompn. of III in EtOH and salicylic acid solns. It differs in color and significantly in x-ray powder diffraction patterns from the α-form which can be prepd. by spontaneous crystn. from EtOH solns.
