New complexons. X. Polarographic investigation of chelates of ethylenediamine-N,N'-diacetic,N,N'-(α,α'-dipropionic) acid with lanthanides and some bivalent cations

Abstract: The chelate-forming properties of ethylenediamine-N,N'-diacetic-N,N'-(α,α'-dipropionic) acid (I) with lanthanides and Pb2+, Cu2+, Mn2+, Co2+, and Zn2+ cations by the substitution with Me groups in the α-position of CH2CO2H groups, attached to N atoms were studied by the polarographic method. The stability consts. of the normal complexes of lanthanides (14 compds.) and bivalent cations with I were detd. polarographically from the exchange equiv. values at μ = 0.10 (KNO3) and 20°. The logarithms of the stability consts. are expressed graphically as a discontinuous function of the at. no. of the lanthanide forming the central atom of the complex for both chelating agents. They are on the av. 1/2 unit lower than the corresponding complexes of the ethylenediamine-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (II). Gd shows a characteristic break. The complexes of I with Cu, Co, and Zn acting as the central atoms, in chelating value are practically the same and Pb and Mn are 1 order smaller, compared with II.
