Abstract: The reaction of the α-form of TiCl3 with solns. of the alkyl derivs. of pyridine in hexane was described. The diffuse reflectance spectra and the chem. properties of the reaction products indicate that the reaction is similar to that with pyridine with the formation of the nonstoichiometric compds. with a gradually increasing amt. of the chem. bound alkyl deriv. of pyridine. The end products of the reaction are green colored complexes of the type [TiCl3L3] which form green solns. in C6H6. With alkyl derivs. of pyridine, substituted in the position 2, the solid products have the compn. TiCl3Ln with n <2. The diffuse reflectance spectra of these compds. have an electron transition band with a max. at 18,300 cm-1, which is the measure of the no. of chloride bridges, and a band with the max. at 23,800 cm-1, which is the measure of the no. of L mols. coordinated with Ti(III).
