Abstract: Polarographic reduction of Chromates in neutral non-buffered medium was studied
Experimental results indicate that the mechanism of the electrode process is rather
complicated. A part of the results corroborate the assumptions of J. J. Lingane and
I. M. Kolthoff that the products of the electroreduction of the chromáte ions —
the chromium(III) hydroxide or the basic chromium(III) chromáte — are adsorbed
on a surface film and this film hinders the electroreduction. Since the kind and the
concentration of the basic electrolyte influence on the first wave of the Chromates, the
assumptions of J. J. Lingane and I. M. Kolthoff may be completed in that the minimum
is explained as being due to the electrostatic repulsive forces of anions which are being
reduced on the negatively charged electrode surface. The above results and their interpretation
are related — among others — to the works of L. Gierst and coworkers.
