Investigation of the electrode processes in melts of the cryolite-aluminum fluoride-alumina-sodium chloride system by the E-tau curves method

Abstract: The electrode processes in melts of the system Na3AlF6-AlF3-Al2O3-NaCl were studied at 1000° by the detn. of the potential of the arrest. The arrest potential is practically not affected by the cryolite ratio. The neg. values of the potential are increased at low Al2O3 concns. which can be explained by the fact that in this medium the Pt electrode functions as an O electrode. The addn. of NaCl to the electrolyte, in the production of Al, does not increase the possibility of Na sepn. at the cathode.
