Refinement of the Crystal Structure of Mullite

Abstract:  42 parameters of the crystal structure of 1.83/1-mullite have been refined by the least-squares method. The intensities of 1817 independent diffractions have been estimated visually, the final i?-factor is 0.113 (0.080). The results of the refinement confirmed the scheme of the mullite structure previously determined [1, 2, 4, 5], especially the distribution of the electron density in the neighborhood of the oxygen position, linking the Si and Al tetrahedra in the direction perpendicular to the c-axis, as suggested in [2]. The interatomic distances and bond angles as well as the review of the apparent thermal vibrations of the individual atoms are also given.
