Abstract: The concepts of total complexity (the ratio of total concn. to concn. of the free ion) of an element (metal) and total ligand no. were used to describe extn. equil. of chelates and assocs. Some simplifying assumptions for material balance equations are given. The possibility of characterizing systems contg. stoichiometrically equiv. amts. of metal and extg. agent in terms of corresponding extn. systems (systems with equal concns. of free ligands and identical partition coeffs.) is discussed. An expression for the max. extn. capacity of a chelate system was derived. The Fe3+-acetylacetone-CCl4 system is used as an example.
