Oxidation of isomeric 2,4,4-trimethylpentenes by thallium(III) sulfate in aqueous medium

Abstract:  The course, corrditions, and characteristics of the products of oxidation of 2,4,4-trimethyl-l- and -2-pentene by thallium(III) sulfate in aqueous solution of sulfuric acid were studied. Among the parameters particularly the influence of temperature, the structure of the starting olefins, and the molar ratio olefin/TI3+ on the reaction rate and the selectivity was studied. The main products of the oxidation were carbonyl compounds and corresponding vicinal glycols. Under certain conditions also consecutive products of a condensation character were produced.
