Synthesis of D-glucose 3-O-ethers as models representing the α-ether type linkage between lignin and carbohydrates

Abstract: Reaction of Na salt of 1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-α-D-glucofuranose with substituted benzyl halides, followed by acid hydrolysis gave 3-O-p-methoxybenzyl- and 3-O-veratryl-D-glucose. Acid hydrolysis of 1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-α-D-glucofuranose 3-O-p-methoxybenzyl and 3-O-veratryl derivs. showed that the stability of the ether linkage in these compds. is comparable to that of the 1,2-O-isopropylidene acetal residue.
