Abstract: In the presence of molybdic acid, anhydrogalactitol I undergoes conversion to its L-ido isomer which affords L-xylose on oxidative degrdn. Based on this model compd. representing the 1-deoxy analogs of aldopyranoses, the mechanism of epimerization of aldoses is discussed in terms of a simultaneous change of the configuration at carbon atoms C-2 and C-3.
