Abstract: 4-Nitrophenylhydrazones of maltose, cellobiose and lactose were degraded with H2O2 under catalytic action of molybdate ions to disaccharides shorter by one C atom: 3-O-α-D-glucopyranosyl-D-arabinose, 3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-D-arabinose, and 3-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-D-arabinose, resp. The prepd. hexosylpentoses were characterized by 13C-NMR spectroscopy.
