Spectrophotometric determination of trans-β-carotene isomerization. The effect of temperature

Abstract: Changes of trans-β-carotene (I) in hexane soln. caused by boiling are described. There is an isomerization with a formation of cis isomers which show lower extinction values in the spectrophotometric detn. If the soln. is distd. over boiling water, there is a rapid isomerization and a partial decompn. of I. If the distn. is carried out at 70-80° at decreased pressure and if the last 3 to 4 ml. of soln. are removed by CO2 stream, I does not change.
